Scouffi was a gay Greek tenor born in Egypt who moved to the Hotel Chicago in Paris. He lived with a young soldier there the last two years of his life and was murdered in there in 1932. The novel concerns a gay street gigolo who works the streets between Blanche and Pigalle. Originally published in 1929.
