London: W.H. Smith and Son, 1857. Hardcover. Unpaginated preliminaries with a long folded map (7x27 inches), followed by by-laws, etc. for travellers and a list of fares. Text with tables and numerous moderately good wood-engravings on pp.1-200; followed by 190p. of advertisements for hostelries and anything else, plentifully illustrated. Hardbound in 7.5x4 inch cloth boards gilt with elaborate panelling in blind. The cover is peeling; casing is layered with a slightly shiny brown exterior that looks good except along joints and spine panel where it is lifting off and chipping away. The long map is also a little worn, with misfoldings and dust-soil, but is all there. Cover is fair to good, interior is good to very good. Front free endsheet is inscribed with author's compliments in June of 1857.
