Gordone was an Elkhart, Indiana native who claimed African American, Native American, French and Irish ancestry. Blackston was African American and founded the Players in 1980. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Gordone was the first African American to win the prize in 1969. (Note: Ron Thompson, an old acquaintance of the cataloger, originated the role of Shanty Mulligan in 1969.).
