The main character is a gay composer who is conscripted and who refuses to serve. He is imprisoned. The book was banned under the Defence of the Realm Act. The author who married composer Cyril Scott but lived for many years with Melanie Mills in a lesbian relationship also wrote as Lucian Wainwright, Mrs Cyril Scott, and Eunice Buckley.
