The case of the "Athenia"

Berlin: Volk und Reich, 1940. Pamphlet. 53p., staplebound booklet, corner bumped, ownership name stamped in upper right corner of front cover. German Information Service.

Nazi propaganda booklet intended to reduce American sympathy for the British after the sinking of the steamship Athenia, the first British passenger ship to go down in WWII. Germany was especially sensitive about the potential impact on American opinion because 28 US citizens had been aboard the ship. The booklet denies that Germany torpedoed the Athenia, and accuses England of spreading warmongering lies. After the war had ended, Germany conceded responsibility for the attack.
