Ingersoll was a prominent agnostic orator. Mowbray was an English anarchist, member of the Socialist League, and friend of William Morris. At the time of publication he was on a speaking tour of the US, and in December 1894 he was arrested after a speech in front of the Ladies' Liberal League and charged with inciting sedition.
