Statue Attack Draws Ire of Police, Mayor [handbill]

[Buffalo, NY]: npl, [1970]. Single sheet, printed both sides, 8.5x15 inches, creased from being folded in fourths else very good condition.

Flier issued in response to President Nixon declaring May 1st "Law and Order Day," urging people to celebrate May Day instead. Rear reproduces a newspaper photo of a policeman standing next to the destroyed statue of a policeman in Haymarket Square, which had been erected in 1889 and bombed by the Weathermen in 1969. The statue was rebuilt and unveiled on May 4, 1970, only to be bombed again soon after. Penciled note, which we believe was written by Maurice Rovner of Kenmore, NY, reads "Distributed to high school students, Buffalo, Apr. 30, 1970"
