Originally published in 1935 this was Steinbeck's first popular success. It was reissued as an illustrated edition in 1947 and several more times. This was likely published to coincide with the 1962 Nobel Prize. This is also one of Steinbeck's more controversial books in present day America due to the humorous treatment of Latino characters in Monterey.
