Racism and anti-unionism walk hand in hand [handbill]

Berkeley: Young Socialist Alliance, 1967. 8.5x11 inch handbill, mimeographed both sides, date penned in corner.

Text describes the efforts of the Painters Union to challenge the Golden Gate Bridge Authority's policy of only hiring white painters to work on the bridge's famous span. It summarizes the process by which two Black men, James Haugabook and Jimmie Lee Wilkins, were hired with the support of shop steward Paul Powell, after which the Authority found an excuse to fire all three. States that the Authority uses racism in concert with its general anti-labor policies. The text on the reverse invites Berkeley students to carpool to San Francisco to join a protest against the firings that was organized by the Painters Union.
