The Party, based in Michigan, called for the immediate withdrawal of US military forces from overseas, repeal of laws against homosexuality and prostitution, and pot legalization, among other issues. The HRP had two candidates elected to the Ann Arbor city council in 1972, both of whom later came out as gay. In 1974, HRP candidate Kathy Kozachenko was elected to the council, becoming the first openly lesbian candidate to be elected to public office in the United States.
