London: John Murray, 1899. Hardcover. xi, 298p., features a fine folded map in colors (very detailed though not large; opposite p292), a number of b&w photographs by a member of the expedition, and a photogravure portrait of Durand as frontispiece, tissue-guarded. The first edition but a separate issue "not for circulation in the British Isles" (per cover-label text), hardbound in green cloth boards titled and decorated in gilt and red ink. The top edge is gilded, a nice production but a fair-only copy; complete and handleable but casebinding very edgeworn with fray at most extremities, top rim has lost an eighth-inch of cloth, spine is dark with handling-soil. Pervasive light foxing also. The map is unmolested and fine, frontis portrait good with foxing to tissue-guard, interesting bookplate on pastedown (see below). Reading copy. Murray's imperial library: not for circulation in the British isles.
Concerns events 1890-1895. Bookplate is a steel engraving commissioned by John M. Schiff, shows his formidable estate "Northwood" - Schiff an investment banker, his work, his mansion and estate will google.
