no place: International Beauty Shop Owners, Convention & Exhibition, Inc., 1957, 1957. Pamphlet. 42p., illustrated with two sorts of drawing: the finished look, and the how-to. Reasonably alkaline paperstock, a folio-sized pamphlet (13.5x11 inches) softbound in bright red cardstock decorated & titled white, once stapled but staples now removed leaving mild traces of rust. Edgeworn with all edges troubled with spotty foxing. A fair to good-only copy. Two unprofessional comments: 1) none of the styles show a longish coiffure, all longer than a "bob" but none venture much below the occipital bone. 2) nor can we tell them apart.
NB, this Professional Edition not for the hoi polloi but a "Patron Edition" is available for the client: "Let her select the hairdo that she feels is HER and in this way you will please the lady and get to know her better. Beauty work is intimate work and this will reveal confidences that you will share with her alone forever." Further professional tips from Laer's text: "How to use the technique book to utmost advantage..Styles for the Home..for Business..for Sports..for the Mature Woman..Informal..Formal..[and] Facial Analysis: A complete discussion on hairstyling and makeup for the seven different face-types..styling hair and makeup to correct feature imperfections.." --FYI, the seven types are round face, oblong, square, diamond, triangle, oval, inverted triangle; each type is cross-referenced to Patron Edition, possibly with an altered text.
