The newspaper, under the editorship of Marcus Overseth, appeared first in September 1969 as an underground paper without a specific sexual orientation. The second issue had about 1/3 gay content, then became all-gay - and increasingly psychedelic - through its final issue (#10, May, 1970)The next issue was titled San Francisco Gay Free Press and was numbered volume 2, #11 followed by the second issue of that paper renumbered volume 1, #2.
