"..as lived by the author during the period from 1928 to 1935." Kaibah's mother (father had died) made pleasant connections with a missionary family (became acquainted but not evangelized) from Los Angeles at the time of a long drought which stressed livestock and humans. The missionaries invited mom to allow daughter to return with them for schooling and household help, and this was accepted in 1935 with Kaibah still a teenager.
