Los Angeles: Los Angeles Free Press, 1970. Newspaper. 44p., in two sections as customarily issued, 17.5x11.5 inch folded tabloid, very lightly toned, illus., a bit of fraying, but otherwise a very good, well-preserved copy.
The LA "Freep" was without question the most professional of all UG papers. Cover stories on three LGBT themes: Profile of Rev. Troy Perry and his MCC ministry; report on the West Coast Gay Liberation Conference and Symposium in Berkeley, and a lengthy piece by Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon on Lesbianism. Much cultural coverage: electronic music, records, and TV. Article on surviving in the wilderness after a car breakdown, report on Chicago Conspiracy "non-trial," and other news and ads of the era. The main cover headline - "Homosexual Gov't Planned" - turns out to be about a budding effort to establish a gay-only self-governing settlement in the boondocks.
