San Francisco Calif., and New York City: Self-published by the author, [1879 to 1882]. Hardcover. A startlingly fine copy of an eccentric reference compilation: 624p., two illustrations (graphs involving the conversion of "miners' inches" to hydraulic horse-power); a small thick hardbound in pebbled cloth gilt and blind, 7.5x4.5 inches. Faintest edgewear: a dot of cardstock does show at each of the four corner-tips but these are scarcely turned. A bright bright copy, complete sound and unmarked, by a San Francisco resident. Author's holograph emendation on the copyright page shows McCarty moved to 502 Taylor from 816 California. Also there find notice of one E.R. McCarty at Hotel Brunswick NYC (his or her job unknown). Other local info: presswork by Winterburn & Co. 417 Clay, binderywork at 505 Clay by Bartling and Kimball.
Professionally run-up, amateur at heart. The index is amusingly inconsequent: "Bicycling, best time. Billiard-Playing, best score. Biography, general. Birds, Flight of" and so on.
