The Wonderful City of Carrie Van Wie; Paintings of San Francisco at the Turn of the Century with Text by Oscar Lewis

San Francisco: Printed at The Grabhorn Press for The Book Club of California, 1963. Hardcover. Unpaginated, a brief introduction followed by full-page color reproductions (details below), letterpress folio (14.5x10 inches) with openweave raw linen spine over brocaded cloth boards; luckily this exemplar lacks the woefully acidic kraft-paper dj originally furnished by the sometimes cash-strapped Grabhorns. A worn copy, with card showing at corner-tips, fraying at the cloth tail, stain- and handling-soil to linen spine, a badly faded spine label and an ownership sticker-scar on the pastedown . Carrie's artwork leaves something to be desired as well.

Van Wie, a 'primitive' perhaps rather than 'outsider', was here given maestra treatment: "color reproductions are the size of the originals and were made from blocks engraved by Mary Grabhorn printed over collotype plates. The printing was done by Alain Gernez and Edwin Grabhorn with type set by Robert Grabhorn."
