As a Greek national, Bennahmias' story is unusual; he spoke neither German nor Yiddish and suffered more than others from the northern European cold; these perhaps are amongst the reasons Auschwitz overseers chose him for gas chamber and crematoria work. Writer Rebecca Fromer worked with the elderly Bennahmias three years, gently reviving his memories.
