Reynolds, a radical science fiction author, was for many years associated with the Socialist Labor Party and included many Marxist ideas in his science fiction. This novel features an IWW member as its hero; he volunteers for a game in which he becomes a target of assassins in exchange for a large up-front payment. He can use his money as he wishes to evade discovery or to live it up. His motivation, however, is to draw media attention to the IWW's cause.
