The title appears to be meant in aviation's sense of "friction," according to Leo Ribuffo's discussion of Pelley, citation below. The plot of this novel: Bumpkin conquers small town journalism, goes to the big city. More rural Vermont than (ultimate destination) Hollywood and aviation. While the self-confessed bumpkin aspires to journalism, there is nothing in his fictionalized self-history about Pelley's greatest journalistic coup, his 1918 journey to Japan which became a six-months' introjection into Siberia with American troops sent to short-circuit the Bolshevik revolution.
