Five volumes in six books (vol. 5 is in two parts), about 230 - 380 pages per volume, 10.75x14.5 inches, illustrated throughout with facsimile maps, many folding, some offsetting to endpapers from dj flaps, otherwise very good first edition set limited to 1000 copies bound in oat-cloth boards and green leather backed spines with gilt titles and original brown paper jackets (volume 5 parts 1 and 2 are numbered at bottom of these jackets). Original prospectus laid-in, with lightly-soiled wraps. Also included is Mapping the Transmississippi West 1540-1861: an index to the Cartobibliography, Occasional Paper #3, Speculum Orbis Press, Winnetka, IL, 1992, 210p. bound in blue cloth boards and gilt.

Vol. 1: The Spanish Entrada to the Louisiana Purchase, 1540-1804; Vol. 2: From Lewis & Clark to Fremont, 1804-1845; Vol. 3: The Mexican War to the Boundary Survey, 1846-1854; Vol. 4: Pacific Railroad Surveys to the Onset of the Civil War, 1855-1860; Vol. 5 (Parts 1 & 2) Civil War to the Geological Survey. Grabhorn produced the first volume and Taylor & Taylor 2 - 5, with the James Co. producing both parts of volume 5, all from Grabhorn design.
