The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman with an essay on the author and his novel by Melvyn New, and with thirty-nine photo-collage illustrations by John Baldessari
San Francisco: Arion Press, 1988. Slipcased. Three volume set slipcased. Volume 1: 620p., hardbound in marbled boards under green half-calf gilt; the identical marbled paper is tipped-in on page 216 as "the motley emblem," and it is a fine example of the marbler's art. This volume contains the complete text of the novel. The wide moss-green spine panel of soft calfskin exhibits faintest scratching, a fine copy nonetheless. Volume 2: 42p., illustrated with reproductions of Hogarth's illustrations for "Shandy" fine in green stiff card covers and gilt. Volume 3: 9 double-page photo-collages in an accordion-fold binding of green cloth over boards and gilt title, signed in pencil by the artist. All in a fine green cloth-over-boards slipcase. A 12p. prospectus with color centerfold reproduction of Baldessari's art in stapled green covers laid-into the case. Publication no. 26.
Gorgeous production which stays true to Sterne's typography and is brilliantly, humorously illustrated by Baldessari.
