The Splendid Idle Forties

Kentfield: The Allen Press, 1960. Hardcover. 110p., letterpress on Rives, folio hardbound in 13.5x9 inch boards covered in a lovely yellow Fortuny, with printed spine label and the as-issued acetate wrapper. The usual meticulous attention to detail Allen Press delivers. There is faint (very faint) wave to all leaves --the dark side of being "printed damp"? at any rate, there it is, the only flaw we detect; the casing is absolutely square and tight, fabric bright, dj unflawed, no ownership or any other markings, a near-fine copy; and comes with the letterpress prospectus of 4p., also fine, and the original purchaser's invoice bearing holograph entries by (we think) Dorothy Allen.

Please note that the Allens, doubtless with counsel from Oscar Lewis, elected to print here just six stories of Atherton's thirteen, the most "Californian."
