Bridles & Spurs; With a Preface by Nathan van Patten

San Francisco: The Grabhorn Press, 1951. Hardcover. xvi, 70p., printed in red and black on mould-made paper, "symbolical devices" by Mallette Dean in red and gilt. Small quarto, 10x7.5 inches, with Irish linen backing over apple-green paper boards and paper spine label gilt; no. 59 of 178. The prospectus is laid in, along with the purchaser's note to himself (accession date) on a subscriber's form plus a loose copy of his unusual bookplate in two colors; that it was once tipped in is shown by a faint adhesive line along a margin of the bookplate and an unobtrusive answering line on the front free endsheet (owner was Lloyd Emerson Siberell). No ownership or other markings, a near-fine copy in a paper-over-boards slipcase that is a little sunned.

The contents "consists of a dozen essays and stories, all printed for the first time in book form and several for the first time in any form. There is a special introduction by Nathan van Patten"..who exchanged observations on Machen with no less a contemporary than James Branch Cabell.
