The author, a journalist, poet and former president of the Puerto Rican chapter of PEN, the international association of writers, was something of a cause celebre in 1985 when her apartment was raided and searched by the FBI in connection with the investigation of a robbery of a Wells Fargo armored truck in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1983 (As reported by the New York Times).
