The Chinese Information Service opened in 1966, with the goal of promoting pro-Taiwan sentiment in the area and fighting against pro-Mainland sentiment. A 1967 article on the first anniversary of the San Francisco office noted that "The operation of the Pacific Coast bureau covers an area consisting of 13 states west of the Rockies, including the Hawaii islands and Alaska."
