Local 22 Dressmakers was part of a reorganization of the ILGWU in the early 1930s to remove Communist leadership. Charles "Sasha" Zimmerman was a former Communist who became an anti-communist and led the local in the 1930s. The meeting was a challenge for a debate between Zimmerman the left-wing Grossman, who would support the left platform for the union, and was held at the Royal Mansion, a night club.
