The miner boy and his Monitor; the career and achievements of John Ericsson the engineer

New York: William H. Appleton, 1865. 297p., several inserted wood-engraved plates, a decorated series leaf, and a solitary tailpiece (propeller). First edition blind-embossed cloth with spine titling and picture gilt; a poor copy with very slack signatures, spine very dim with lower joint completely split and a lateral tear developing. The ffep is neatly removed, the only loss we see. We see no attempts to sophisticate or repair, which short of professional recasing would only further disfigure. Small ancient stains (of food in the hands of a child most probably) and foxing within. Reading copy at best.. except that the frontis engraving is an exciting one; shows the monitor-class ironclad "USS Dictator" in a storm.
