Boston: Henry Hoyt, 1866. 305p., frontispiece is a photographic portrait from the negative, first edition bevelled green cloth boards with spine title and rolled device gilt, panelled in blind, t.e.g., headbands; somewhat edgeworn, with some tiny tears along a too-deeply impressed ruling at the head, two old bookplates on the matte-brown endsheets, and a neat ownership signature on the title page. Photo-portrait is a bit faded round the eyes. All things considered, a good copy.
A typed note on a San Franciscan surgeon's letterhead (Phelan Bldg., phone Fillmore 1819), notes that according to Langley's 1876 SF city directory, the rev Andrew L. Stone was pastor at Post & Mason in 1866, that the ownership sig on title (H.H. Ellis) was chief of police, and that the older bookplate naming one David M. Bokee belonged to a book-keeper who lived at 2008 Pierce St. This typed notice is laid in. Expect essays abounding in Civil War sentiment, what would God do about rebellions &c.
