Kalu was born in Nigeria and raised in Missouri, Texas and Massachusetts. At the time of this publication she lived in Oakland, California and spent four years with June Jordan's Poetry for the People Program. This is her first book, self-published, but in 2006 it was re-issued by Whit Press in Seattle. The cover photo on this edition depicts Kalu, her mother, great-aunt, twin sister and brother. Includes several poems in the Igbo language.
