A snowball's chance; a story of life in a mental hospital

New York: Exposition Press, 1963. Hardcover. 73p., orange cloth boards in dj, slightly shelfworn dj, jacket is rubbed, rubberstamp o fore-edge, else very good condition. Review copy slip inlaid. EP 41116.

Fictionalized autobiography in which the narrator's wife, given shock "treatments" was electrocuted; Kirk supplies no technical details, this is not a conspiracy scenario or much of a muckrake, just sad malpractice. Author photo shows that however unlikely "Hegel Kirk" is a real name (he's wearing an ID tag), looks like a big goofy friendly old guy, his vita says that he was "born in 1895, has been a pioneer in the radio field, starting as a boy experimenter in the 'wireless' days of 1908. He has held radio licenses since the first radio law of 1912 and built one of the first broadcasting stations in the West --KFFR. Several of his articles on his electronic inventions have been published in professional magazines. He became interested in working to promote mental health when his wife died in a state mental hospital in August, 1955. Since then he has helped form clubs for former patients and writes pen-pal letters to patients."
