An historical overview of the penetration and suppression of Western religion in Japan, focusing primarily on Christianity but with a section on Buddhism. Extensive discussion of the suppression of Catholicism under the Tokugawa regime as well as examination of cultural factors that hampered its spread, such as the Samurai suicide ethic's conflict with Christianity. Yamamoto worked with James Hepburn on his Japanese Bible dictionary.
