London: no publisher, 1724. Leather_bound. lxii+284p., very old (probably original)leather boards have been rebacked in calf a little too brightly with a new gilt spine label reading "Christian Discourse," hinges have been neatly strengthened. First issue; with Preface to the reader containing an apology for Mr. Whiston's liberty of writing, footnotes, conclusion, a sound copy.

Anthony Collins was a deist who believed that Freethought was a cure for atheism. He was a close friend of philosopher John Locke. His first major work was "A Discourse on Freethinking" In the discourse on the Christian religion he argues that Christianity is based on Judaism and rejects his friend Locke's argument that the messiahship of Christ is the fundamental reason for being a Christian. This book naturally drew quite a bit of fire from the religious establishment.
