Jamesian novel with genuinely witty dialogue. In the 1920s Appleton began using their (1) on final page to indicate printing. Previous to that the method has not been disclosed (Zempel & Verkler begin their entry with the 1928 statement) The title page and copyright page both state 1900 and there are no numbers in parenthesis at all on final pages.
