Wilshire, 1861-1927, called by a contemporary the "P.T. Barnum of American socialism," was an active socialist who made his money in real estate speculation in Southern California (Wilshire Boulevard is named after him). He was a close friend of Upton Sinclair, in fact he converted Sinclair along with, Jack London and many others to Socialism. *Johnpoll.
