The Puerto Rican poet was the co-founder of the Diepalismo literary movement and of the Afro-Antillano poetry movement which blended words from the Afro-Caribbean culture into the Spanish verse of Puerto Rico. He was also the screenwriter for the first Puerto Rican film with sound, "Romance Tropical"
