Yanish lived in California and was a Jewish activist in the Communist Party. He joined in Oakland in 1936 and persuaded his new comrades to open a storefront on East 14th despite fears that they "would be picked off like ducks." In his case it took a decade; in 1946 the DoJ declared him "a deportable alien"
