The anti-communist, conservative activist was at one time a very youthful member of the Young Communist League (joining was "probably one of the great moments of my young life; to me, it was like an honorary secret society limited to the very best.."), a member of Bernard Malamud's first highschool teaching assignment class ("He encouraged me to write") and semi-protegee, and later a founder of Young Americans for Freedom. A weirdly welcoming anti-communist.
