Red Party / Mayday / Russian Center / A dance benefit for the 1982 Gay Olympic Games and Golden Gate Performing Arts [poster]

San Francisco: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, 1982. 22.5x17.5 inch poster, featuring two of the Sisters amid a vaguely architectural design with several smiling mouths atop columns. The event featured the Falcon Ballet Theatre and the Barbary Coast Cloggers, as well as DJ George Epileptic.

A history on the Sisters' website notes that this party, campily scheduled on the communist May Day, irked some at the Russian Center on Sutter at Divisadero where it was held, which was associated with White Russians. "The woman managing the center was the daughter of the head general to the czar in the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. We learned that 'white' and 'red' are like oil and vinegar!" The Gay Olympic Games were sued three weeks before the games were to open, forcing the organizers to drop the name "Olympics," and the event was renamed the "Gay Games," under which name it continues to exist.
