Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1900. Hardcover. xxiii, 284p., tissue-guarded frontis illustration and clear illustrations throughout printed on heavy stiff paperstock (alkaline, no toning), untrimmed fore and bottom edges signatures unopened throughout (be careful!) with top edge gilt. Cased into strong 9x6 inch khaki-brown boards decorated with crown device on spine and white, gold and black chessboard on front cover; gilt and spot-colors all fine and bright. Author's heartfelt dedication to "The memory of Charles Paul Morphy.." is quite touching. Find several gaps (not cracks) in the textblock, signatures have pulled away from backstrip just slightly (per examination of the top edge), and the otherwise clean endsheets are oddly india-ink sprayed. The former owner laid down a bookplate and some faint rubber-stampings of ownership, these unobjectionable. A lovely copy; ask us how to "open" signatures if you've never done it.
