[compiled in Pennsylvania]: [adherent or minister of the Mennonite Brethren of Christ in Pennsylvania], [1900-1903]. Hardcover. Commercial scrapbook of the period, 9x6 clothbacked marbled boards enclosing perhaps one hundred leaves, all but the last dozen jam-packed with several hundred long folded newsprint columns pasted atop one another, interspersed with period snapshots most of which inexpertly glued in; several photos are loosely inserted and these bear brief verso location notes. Casing is exceedingly edgeworn, leaves are acidic, a quarter or so of the pictures are faded to sepia, several to white-out. Clipped texts (bible lessons and exhortation only) are toned and fragile, all can be read. First leaf bears a holograph inscription: "J. [name bleached out], Easton, Pa. Presented to M. P. Zook by his dear Bro P. J. Musselman Philadelphia. Jan. 10. 03". We have found a modern facsimile (enclosed) of the 36th annual Mennonite Conference (1919) declaring M. P. Zook to have been "Superintendent of our Missions in Chile, South America, with us at this Conference during his furlough, the first one he had after almost fourteen years of service." Mrs. Zook attended also; it would seem that very shortly following the presentation of this scrapbook ('03) the Zooks took off for Chile. Item as is.
A note on the pictures. All are from the negative, save for the fading fairly clear, sizes run (in inches) from 2x3 to 3x5, with a 6.5x4.5 group pose affixed to front pastedown. Most appear to be of subjects, buildings and landscapes that belong to the American Eastern seaboard, but some definately taken abroad. One is labeled in the plate (it may be a postcard) "Tibetan woman and child"
