Luis Leal was from a family which fought in the Mexican Revolution. He immigrated to the US, studied and taught in the South, Chicago, and finally UC Santa Barbara. He published around 45 books and was influential in bring Latin American writers like Anaya and Garcia Marquez into the curriculum.
