Douai, 1819-1888, was one of the few German-American Marxists of the 1848 generation to remain active in the Socialist movement. Douai first emigrated to Texas were he established an antislavery newspaper, The San Antonio Zeitung, he was later driven out of Texas because of his abolitionist politics. He was also an early advocate of kindergartens, and wrote probably the earliest fiction by an American Marxist, Fata Morgana, deutsch-amerikane Preis-Novelle, published in 1858.
