Stembridge was an activist and the first SNCC staff person. A white Southerner born in Georgia she participated in the Civil Rights Movement in the South beginning in 1960. This poetry collection was written during and about her experiences with the Civil Rights movement the South. Stembridge resigned from SNCC in protest of its homophobia and snubbing of Bayard Rustin.
