New York: D. Appleton and Company, 549 Broadway, 1872. Leather_bound. viii, 568, vi, 576p., alkaline paperstock, engraved images aplenty with many fullpage steel-engraved plates on cardstock, first issue light-brown morocco massive bevelled boards titled and decorated gilt with pressed dark-brown panels; each measures 13x10 inches and is about 3" thick. All edges gilt with inner dentelles, marbled endsheets, the full monty as late-19th century book-designers understood presentation. The tail lettering on both volumes reads "P. M. Alden," possibly the bindery. Extremities somewhat abraded without significant loss; cardstock sheets tend to be spottily foxed; most seriously find a two-inch split at the rear joint of v.I, not reflected in the hinge, which is sound. One very slight start at p.163 of v.II, plate not at risk. Very good set of an item later issued in multiple smaller bindings. *BAL 1732, state 2 with Bryant's name on the title page of first volume.
