An Illustrated History of Los Angeles County California. Containing a History of Los Angeles County from the Earliest Period of its Occupancy to the Present Time, together with Glimpses of its Prospective future; with Profuse Illustrations of its Beautiful Scenery, Full-Page Portraits of Some of its most Eminent Men, and Biographical Mention of Many of its Pioneers and also of Prominent Citizens of To-day [titlepage text; external lettering reads "Los Angeles County," spine, and "Pen Pictures from the Garden of the World," cover]

Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1889. 835p., massive hardbound volume, 11.5x9.2 inch bevelled boards, pressed leather gilt-decorated, a.e.g. Find numerous inserted plates, bearded white males, we see only two views (L.A. in 1854, and Santa Monica Beach); there are no tell-tale signs of removal of any plates. Casing is poor, textblock intact and good to very good. Both hinges are cracked through, the upper held only by one cord, the lower much better. Spine panel is peeling away and the bottom half is entirely absent. Should re-casing be an option, spine title and boards are perfectly salvageable. The publishers acknowledges H.H. Bancroft as primary source. Frontis portrait has offset onto title page, same portrait is present but is taped in with ancient scotch tape and reversed (no longer faces title). Ex library with several institutional rubberstamp impressions, as is.
