London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. Hardcover. 267p., wood-engraved plates throughout the text, most of which half-page, some full- and quarter-page, privately bound not long after publication in quarter-morocco hardcover with raised bands, spine label gilt, devices blind. Upper cover is detached, lower held by cords, the volume held together in a very old clear plastic sleeve we have not removed. Front free marbled endsheet is now misfolded at the gutter but salvageable, one blank is present at each end of the textblock, could be successfully recased. Scattered mild foxing, leaves 3-40 show light marginal creasing, a good textblock.
Long sections on San Francisco and the Bay Area, Yosemite, Calaveras and Mariposa, several Sequoia locations.
