First edition of an important early work on African Americans, professionally rebound in blue cloth boards and leather spine, with the original cover photo of the Clifton Conference neatly applied to the front board. Leather component is superb modern work, polished dark blue calf (beautifully tanned) with red leather labels gilt and gilt marginal rules. Cloth at lower right corner of front cover has lost some of its blue dye. Includes eight pages of Lincolniana including the Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg Address, illustrated throughout with photos Negro churches, schools, leaders etc., hundreds of biographical sketches and photos of Black leaders including W.E.B. Du Bois, Paul Laurence Dunbar etc.
