Edges slightly toned, entirely clean and sound, a near-fine copy. Englishman Stokes entered East Africa as a missionary, was dismissed when, after wife died in childbirth, he remarried into African society. He then took up trading; and was popular with his empoloyees. Executed by the Belgians as his bearers traversed their territory, largely for marrying an African. English and Belgian politics taking a cooperative turn, the matter was buried. Historical studies no. 6.
