The original version of the novel, on two gay Englishmen in the 1930s, one of whom joins the fight against Franco. The novel was withdrawn under threat of a lawsuit by Stephen Spender, who showed that Leavitt plagiarized his autobiography; Leavitt removed and changed passages then reissued.
